A litter of 4 guinea pig babies was born September 13, 2020,
the birth weights and order were (1) 97g, (2) 101g, (3) 92g,
(4) 91g. For unknown reasons, baby (3), a silver agouti +
white male, was unable to learn how to nurse during the first
2 days of life. This was despite coaching and assistance by
the breeder and the sow nursing the other babies normally. On
the third day of life, hand-feeding with the guinea pig milk
replacement formulas published on cavybreeder.org was
initiated. The feeding commenced September 16 and the last
feeding was September 30 at 23:04. The baby was housed with
his mother and littermates for the duration but is known to
have never nursed from her.
On November 20 (aged 69 days), high-resolution pictures were
taken to document the condition of his skin, eyes, fur, and
general body condition. He had the appearance of being healthy
in every way.
Notes about reflections in the eyes:
In pictures showing side view of the eyes, the
patterns visible in the lenses are not because of eye
defects. This was the reflection of the photographer, a
white refrigerator in the background (including refrigerator
magnets), the wooden table, and several artificial light
sources.
Correspondingly, in the head-on picture, the refrigerator
and light sources were on the right side of the guinea pig
(left from viewer) and can be seen in the right eye's
reflection. In the left eye's reflection, a white-colored
kitchen stove/oven with a black window in the oven door, and
a tan-colored floor, are visible. The whole kitchen can be
seen in that eye actually, but these 2 things are most
distinct.
